Research
The lack of fundamental knowledge about the North African houbara prompted ECWP to enhance, from 1996, on a coherent research strategy. The ECWP conducts applied and fundamental research on every area relating to the houbara bustard’s biology, including genetics, reproduction biology, ecophysiology, ecology, behaviour, epidemiology and veterinary science.
These sound research programs aimed:
1) to improve the captive breeding techniques,
2) to enhance the fundamental knowledge of the status, distribution and population trends of natural houbara bustard populations,
3) to understand the genetic structure of natural populations of houbara bustard within North Africa,
4) to study the ecology and ethology of this emblematic species,
5) to evaluate the impact of the restoration program.
